Volunteer: Summer 2026 Volunteer Interest

Interested in volunteering this summer as a literacy tutor or at a book distribution? Please register for this opportunity so we can contact you once all summer dates have been finalized. 

Current summer book distribution information:

Book distributions are a flexible volunteer opportunity with no training required beyond Volunteer Orientation! Volunteers assist with set up, helping student select books to build their home libraries, passing out snacks, and clean up. 

Book distributions will be available at the following YMCA Power Scholars and Camp Excel locations (dates and times to come): East Millbrook Middle, Ligon Middle, Wakefield Middle, Buckhorn Creek Elementary, West Cary Middle, Lakewood Elementary, Carrboro Elementary, Southeast Raleigh Elementary, Zebulon Elementary, River Bend Elementary, Virginia Cross Elementary, and Horton Middle.

Current summer tutoring information:

As a reading tutor, you will work one on one or in small groups with K-5 students. No prior teaching experience is required to be a tutor!

Summer tutoring is a 75-120 minute, once a week commitment. Session duration varies by tutoring site. We ask that tutors commit to attending at least 80% of our available shifts. 

This year's summer tutor programming will operate from June 22nd - August 14. Further details on specific weekly dates and time to come.

Current confirmed locations for tutoring are: Taylor YMCA (meeting at West Cary Middle School) and Kraft YMCA (meeting at Buckhorn Creek Elementary School).

Mobile classroom RV tutoring sites will continue to operate at their standard, academic year times. Start and end dates to come soon.

Please note that to be a reading tutor, you must meet the following qualifications:

1. Attend Tutor Training 

Respond to Tutor Training under "Opportunities" to be eligible to respond to the shifts below.

2. Complete a Background Check

You will receive instructions to complete a background check after Tutor Training. You will receive an email notification once your background check is approved.

Volunteer: Pick Up & Deliver Meals to the Read and Feed Office

Volunteers will first pick up coolers from the Read and Feed Office (171-10 High House Rd, Cary, NC 27511) and then pick up bagged, flash frozen, or hot meals from Inter-Faith Food Shuttle Warehouse (1001 Blair Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609) between 1:00 PM-2:30 PM. Volunteers will then deliver the meals to the Read and Feed Office.

 

The volunteer must first pick up coolers from the Read and Feed Office.

The volunteer must utilize their own personal vehicle. 

Program: Read and Feed Office
